Movie Date Archive Art Project

Updated: Oct 8, 2025

Overview

This project began as a personal list: every movie my husband and I have seen together in theaters since we met. Over time, the list grew into something I wanted to visualize — a design system that could catalog our shared cinema history.

Concept Behind the Design

I created a custom ticket stub for each film, designed within a consistent grid and typographic system. The goal was to treat the archive as both data visualization and design ephemera — something that feels like it could exist while clearly functioning as an art piece.

The Process of Creating the Archive

The process involved several steps:

  • Chronological Cataloging: I built a chronological catalog of every film date we attended.

  • Template Design: I designed a template for the ticket stubs, balancing readability with a nostalgic, tactile feel.

  • Iteration: I iterated on color, layout, and type to create a unified but varied set of tickets.

  • Large-Format Print: Finally, I prepared the collection as a large-format print piece for display.

The Outcome of the Project

The result is an ongoing archive that functions as both wall art and personal artifact. It merges my love for record-keeping, design systems, and storytelling — turning a shared pastime into a piece of speculative memorabilia.

This project not only captures our cinematic experiences but also serves as a creative outlet. It allows us to reflect on the films we've enjoyed together and the memories we've created along the way.

In conclusion, this personal cinema archive is more than just a list of movies; it is a testament to our journey as a couple, documented through the lens of cinema.

By creating this visual representation, I hope to inspire others to document their own experiences in a creative way. After all, every shared moment can become a cherished memory when captured thoughtfully.
